Seniors First Platform – Edmonton 2025

1. Transit & Mobility

  • Expand free transit passes for all seniors on fixed incomes, not just those under the strict low-income cutoff.
  • Increase DATS / Handi-Bus reliability with shorter wait times.
  • Push for senior shuttle loops that connect retirement homes directly to grocery stores, clinics, malls, and rec centres.

2. Safe Streets & Walkability

  • Prioritize snow clearing, sidewalk repair, and lighting around senior buildings.
  • Add benches and rest spots on walking routes near retirement communities.
  • Work with police and bylaw to improve community safety patrols in senior-heavy areas.
  • add speed bumps near centres

 3. Community & Inclusion

  • Expand city-funded recreation and social programs for seniors (arts, fitness, tech help, wellness).
  • Partner with libraries and community centres to create “Seniors Hours” — dedicated times and programs for seniors.
  • Promote intergenerational programs (schools + seniors) to reduce isolation.

4. Housing & Supports

  • Ensure affordable seniors housing is prioritized in new developments.
  • Support expansion of the Seniors Home Supports Program (help with snow removal, yard work, repairs).
  • Protect green spaces near retirement homes so seniors have safe, walkable areas.

5. Voice at City Hall

  • Create a Seniors Advisory Committee tied directly to your council office.
  • Hold regular “Seniors Roundtables” in different neighbourhoods.
  • Commit to quarterly visits to retirement and assisted living facilities to listen directly
